Energy Minister Konrad Mizzi has said that households that were without electricity for more than twelve hours during last Tuesday’s power cuts will receive “€25 in compensation, without prejudice.”

Although most areas saw their electricity restored in the early hours of Wednesday, others remained without power throughout that day.

During a visit on Tuesday to Enemalta’s Electricity Distribution Centre in Marsa, the Minister for Energy thanked the staff for the work carried out to restore power in the shortest possible time.

He said that can understand the frustration of the public and industry. Minister Mizzi said that the Government was not bound to offer compensation but was doing so because it believed that a power failure was not acceptable.

Minister Mizzi said that he had meetings with representatives of employers and together, they talked about how the Government will be helping through schemes and programmes, including specific programmes and payment schemes intended to help those businesses that have fallen behind in their payments over the past years.

He said that other initiatives will include measures to make Enemalta more business friendly and thus reduce bureaucracy. “Discussions are currently underway in this regard with the Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association (MHRA), the General Retailers and Traders Union (GRTU), the Malta Employers Association (MEA) Enerterprise Malta and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry. These measures will be announced in the coming period.”
