In April, registered full-time employment increased by 3.4 per cent when compared to the corresponding month in 2013, while registered part-time employment as a primary job rose by 6.1 per cent, the National Statistics Office said today.

Administrative data provided by the ETC show that over a period of one year, the labour supply excluding part-timers, increased by 3.3 per cent, to 168,849. This was mainly attributed to increases in the full-time gainfully occupied population (+5,339) and in registered unemployment (+115).

In the month under review, Public Administration and Defence, Compulsory Social Security and Administrative and Support Services Activities contributed mostly to the increase in employment. These increases were partly offset by drops in employment in the Construction sector. Within the public sector, a classification shift in employment was registered from Construction to Public Administration.

The number of persons registered as full-time self-employed rose by 435 when compared to April last year, while those registered as employees increased by 4,904. Full-time employment among males and females went up by 2.5 per cent and 5.2 per cent respectively over 2013 levels.

Registered part-time employment for April went up by 5.6 per cent when compared to last year. The sectors that contributed mostly to the increase were Wholesale and Retail Trade; Repair of Motor Vehicles and Motorcycles, +625 persons, followed by Accommodation and Food Service activities, +479.

In April, the number of part-timers who also held a full-time job amounted to 24,401, up by 5.1 per cent when compared to the corresponding month last year.

Employed persons whose part-time job was their primary occupation totalled 34,136, up by 6.1 per cent, or 1,948 persons, when compared to 2013 levels.
