Five men, appeared at the Gozo Court this morning for sentencing, after they pleaded guilty earlier this month to the attempted theft from a shop and showroom in Victoria.

Armed Forces of Malta soldiers Ronnie McKay, Robert Agius and Daniel Vella, were also found guilty of committing a crime they were duty bound to prevent.

Robert Agius and Daniel Vella were sentenced to 13 months in jail suspended for 3 years, Ronnie McKay and Juanito Jimenez were sentenced to 18 months in jail and Kurt Buttieieg was sentenced to 26 months in jail.

The five defendants reserved the right to appeal and the court ordered them to make a personal guarantee of €2,000 each.

The attempted burglary took place at the end of last month, and was foiled after the shop owner intervened as the the men were trying to open a safe. They managed to escape but were later apprehended on the Gozo ferry.
