The Victoria Local Council with the collaboration of Kids Athletics, Kunsill Malti ghall-Isport and the Gozo Sports Complex will be organising a week-end of activities in the historic quarters of Rabat promoting healthy lifestyles.
Through this initiative, the Local Council intends to highlight a number of very pressing issues which the Country and its population are presently experiencing, including obesity among children, lack of physical activity, excessive alcohol consumption and the wide-spread use of abusive substances.
The week-end will be characterised by numerous events which will entertain all the family. With regards to sports, Kids Athletics, Kunsill Malti ghall-Isports (Sports for All and Girls on the Move programmes) and Skola Sport have agreed to organise their regular activities in the squares, streets and alleys found around Independence Square (it-Tokk).
These will be enhanced by a number of other sport disciplines including tag rugby, baseball, softball, handball, football, table tennis and much more. A treasure hunt organised by the Victoria Scouts Group will continue to add to the programme, directly also promoting the historic, archaeological and architectural significance of the area. All activities are free of charge and a voucher of €5.00 from Sportsmania, Victoria, will be given to all participants.
The Local Council however did not stop here. Since the main theme of the event deals with fitness, healthiness and wellbeing issues, the Council also invited a number of Ministries and Government Agencies to promote the different initiatives undertaken in favour of a better quality of life. These will include amongst others Eco-Gozo, SWITCH, initiatives by WasterServ Malta and by the Health Promotion Unit. The European Commission through the European Union Programmes Agency will also provide information regarding the various initiatives undertaken on a European stage. This educational section will provide the general public with direct information regards the various initiatives.
On Friday evening, a centre stage will be set up in Independence Square (it-Tokk) with performances from Klinsmann, Alessia, Sophie, High Energy Dancers, Waterfall Dancers, Traffic Daze band and more. On Saturday the public is invited to attend a Grand Ballet Concert to be held at the Aurora Theatre, Victoria. Full details on the Grand Ballet Concert, including booking details and ticket prices, are available on this link.
A special word of thanks goes to the sponsors without whose support, such initiatives would never take place.

Could someone please enlighten me has to how keeping the long suffering residents of the centre of Victoria awake with yet another loud concert can be considered a healthy event?
And how can such a concert help to cut down on excess drinking when such concerts are well known to encourage even more than the usual weekend excessive drinking, which occurs both during and after such events?
Hopefully some sanity may return to Victoria after the June elections….
It sounds like a fun program, but I am glad I don’t live near the centre of Victoria as the noise will be deafening reverberating through all the little alleys. I don’t think it is a very good venue for a concert. Poor Mr. Scicluna and the rest of the residents!
It is good to promote sports and healthy eating though.
What a pity also that the work in St. George’s square has been delayed for so long and is not nearly finished yet.
