During a meeting between Parliamentary Secretary for Health Chris Fearne and the Maltese Coeliac Association, the new Coeliac Products Voucher Scheme to be introduced in the coming weeks was discussed.
The Parliamentary Secretary explained how this is a step in the right direction. Patients suffering from Coeliac disease will be given a voucher to be collected from Local Councils redeemable against gluten free products.
Mr Fearne said that patients entitled for the Coeliac products under the schedule 5 condition who hold the ‘Kartanzjan’ or are entitled to the pink card will be eligible for a voucher with a higher value.
There are about 50 outlets across Malta and Gozo who have already shown interest to participate in this new scheme and this number is set to increase in the coming months.
“Through this new scheme patients will benefit from a wider choice of gluten-free products from any of the participating outlets,” said Mr. Fearne.
The Health Department will be assessing the implementation of the scheme and the Coeliac Association agreed to meet again once the scheme had started to report feedback from its members.
