A seminar held in Gozo this week brought together the 16 Chief Information Officer of Ministers and Parliamentary Secretaries along with other public officials, with a view to discuss information technology within the Government and how systems can be improved to officials, so that the public is better served.

The discussion focused on ways of ensuring service quality, both internally and externally. Among the external systems discussed there was the use of Government services online, such as e-Government.

Official statistics show that over the past year 485,000 transactions were made through the Government Payment Gateway by which a person initiates a payment to any kind of Government service.

The value of these transactions was 74.6 million. The aim of the Government, it said, is for more people to make use of these online services, which will result in greater efficiency and transparency. This can also be done through the establishment of one-stop shops, the first centres are to be set up later this year.

The Government said that websites of the Ministries and social media were also at the centre of discussions. With a view to making it easier for the public to access information online, work is underway to make changes in the appearance of websites with among others, the services that are most in demand by the public.
