Bad weather cuts short Winter Wallop game between the Bees & Kobras

On Saturday, in overcast weather, the MCA Winter Wallop tried in vain to play out the postponed game between Melita Bees and Krishna Kobras. The two teams were keen to play in the wet conditions.

The Kobras batted first with Malcolm Crabbe and John Grima opening the innings. Crabbe seemed to be sending a message to the national selectors that he is well suited to batting up the order when they play in Prague later this year. He smashed the first ball of the innings to the square leg boundary and was at it again two balls later. His short stay of thirteen balls yielded twenty two runs and also included a six.

Nowell Khosla had made seven runs of five balls before his eyes lit up at a Tony Slater dibbly doubler, Khosla tried to hit it to Qormi, missed and the ball hit his pads and was he duly ruled lbw.

Grima was next to go, making twenty six runs from twenty five balls. Cal Madden taking a good catch in the covers. By far the best innings of the day came from Justin Farrin Thorne who made forty one runs from thirty balls faced. He managed three boundaries and his maiden six at the ground. Of one particular bowler he managed to dismantle for fifteen runs of one over.

Mike Caruana chipped in with twenty three runs not out from thirteen balls, which included three boundaries. Bikram Arora made one run not out.

During the thirteenth over due to the rain, everyone went into the pavilion. Twenty minutes later it was decided that the game be shortened to a fifteen over game to try a have a result. At the end of the fifteen overs the Krishna Kobras had probably their best score of the tournament, that of 139 runs which included nineteen extras.

For Melita. Ian Pendelbury and Sanjay Patel were the other wicket takers with one each. Pendelbury and Madden opened the batting for the Bees. After ten balls being bowled the heavens opened up again and this time after twenty minutes the game was abandoned.

The game will be replayed next Saturday and the final pushed back by a week. This decision still keeps the Kobras hopes alive for a finals berth.

On Saturday the Sunoco Cricket Academy/nursery will be from 9:00am till 10:30am.
