Update: Alternattiva Demokratika Chairperson, Prof. Arnold Cassola, has said in a statement that, “in view of the alleged Giovanna Debono case, which was brought up yesterday by Malta Today, AD is asking PN leader Dr Simon Busuttil why he has as yet taken no action whatsoever to suspend his former Minister for Gozo and party MP, pending further investigations, including Police investigations which are apparently already in hand?”

“In a modern democracy it is inconceivable that Ministers employ their spouses in their own Ministry,” Prof Cassola continued. “Ms Debono has said that she knew nothing about the fact that her husband had been in charge of coordinating construction work undertaken by her Ministry through contractors in private property with the taxpayer footing the bill. This reaction is not credible,” he concluded.

Giovanna Debono, in a statement late this afternoon has denied the allegations, “I categorically deny the allegations being made against me, which are being used in a partisan way and for ulterior reasons of Joseph Muscat.”

“Therefore I am defending my name, and my husband is doing the same. I am willing to repeat this under oath and I will cooperate in any way with any investigation that might be under way. Instead of pointing his finger at me, Joseph Muscat should look at the fingers pointing towards him on the Café Premier scandal, in which he was personally involved.” Mrs Debono said.

6.00pm: The Opposition leader Simon Busuttil has said this afternoon that he will await the outcome of an investigation into allegations that have been made about former Minister Giovanna Debono and her husband, before he makes any decision on what actions may need to be taken.
