Holy Week activities start this weekend for the La Stella Philharmonic Society of Victoria, starting with the annual concert of Sacred Music by the La Stella Band at the Basilica of St George, this coming Saturday, the 28th of March, starting at 8.00pm, the concert is free of charge.
The traditional programme of religious music, will feature primarily Good Friday band marches, sacred music and religious literature, with the participation of the La Stella Band under the direction of Mro Joseph Vella maestro di cappella. and the choir of the basilica Laudate Pueri under the direction of Can. George J. Frendo, assistant maestro di cappella.
The programme of musical pieces will include, Caccini, Chopin, Rossini and Hans Zimmer, among others.
On Maundy Thursday the La Stella Band together with the Konti Ruggieru (Rabat, Malta) band will accompany the devout Good Friday procession that will leave from the Basilica of St George at 7.00pm and will include the carrying of the miraculous Holy Crucifix (1848) sculpted in wood by Pietru Pawl Azzopardi, and other Passion statues, with the participation of the Collegiate chapter and clergy and the Laudate Pueri choir.
The last appointment for the La Stella Band is on Easter Sunday morning at 8.45am in the procession accompanying the statue of the Risen Christ, with the participation of the parish confraternities
During Holy Week there will be an exhibition – Vexilla Regis – organised by the La Stella Youth Association. Among the items being exhibited will be statues and paintings by local and foreign artists, all related to the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
The exhibition is being held in the La Stella Band Club and opens this Friday, the 27th of March and closes Friday, the 3rd of April.
