The extent of vegetation cover over the Maltese islands has been reduced drastically over the years. Increase in population density unfortunately led to fast encroachment of the urban environment over rural areas and the natural environment.
The Ministry for Sustainable Development, the Environment and Climate Change has said that, to partly mitigate this, the 34U Campaign was launched in January 2005. The 34U Campaign gives an opportunity to individuals, NGO’s and companies alike to plant indigenous trees in afforestation areas around the Maltese Islands.
By planting a tree on one of the beautiful sites that are all around, they will be contributing towards a better environment and will help create greener and healthier places for people to enjoy for generations to come.
The price of €14 includes the tree, stake, an aluminium tag bearing a dedication and also a commemorative photo which will be sent to the given address, which usually takes around two weeks after planting.
The sponsor does not have to be a resident of Gozo or Malta, tourists who wish to plant a tree can also do so. The commemorative photo will be mailed to their home address.
The P.A.R.K. Directorate will then be responsible for the initial planting and careful nurturing of the tree. If the tree dies it will be replaced at no extra cost by our department.
Planting trees is a perfect way to honour an individual, commemorate an event such as a wedding, an anniversary, a graduation, or even memorialise a loved one, or even a pet. It is also a living legacy, a gift which will grow stronger year after year, and a unique and elegant way to express your feelings with a gift that will grow stronger with every passing year.
A location can be chosen by the person sponsoring the tree. The Directorate will collaborate even with local councils, to ensure that the sponsor is happy with the location and proper care is taken after the planting.
Sponsors can book a tree either by sending an email on 34u@gov.mt , call on 22922333 or apply online here.
