Air Malta and Sky-Gourmet, the airline’s catering supplier, are once again assisting the local Breast Care Support Group in raising breast health awareness amongst Air Malta customers. As from mid-October, Air Malta’s cabin crew have started distributing pink ribbons on flights and are collecting donations to assist the Group’s initiatives. The pink ribbon is the international logo for breast cancer awareness.
A similar campaign was organised last year on Air Malta flights. With the funds donated the Group has printed various information booklets that assist them in their awareness campaigns.
The Breast Care Support Group is a non-profit NGO which has been active since 1989. Unfortunately, the incidence of breast cancer is increasing all over the world, and Malta is no exception. At present, around 1 in 10 women can expect to get breast cancer at some time in their life, and recent studies have forecasted that this figure is set to rise.
As well as providing practical and moral support to women diagnosed with breast cancer, the Breast Care Support Group aims to raise awareness about the importance of early detection of the disease, since survival rates are considerably improved if breast cancer is caught at an early stage. The group gives talks on breast self-examination, produces articles to be published in the press and prints and distributes leaflets about self-examination and prevention. The vast majority of the group’s members are breast cancer survivors and all the work they do is on an entirely voluntary basis. The Group relies on donations and sponsorships to fund their campaigns.
“We are again pleased that Air Malta is assisting this campaign. With the support of our customers our cabin crew and Sky-Gourmet we are assisting the local Breast Care Support Group in increasing awareness amongst our customers and the general public,” said Brian Bartolo, General Manager Marketing and Product at Air Malta.
October is the breast cancer awareness month and the Group is holding a number of events and promotions including a public lecture to be held at 7.30pm on Thursday the 16th of October at the Hotel Phoenicia in Floriana.
Air Malta’s assistance forms part of its ‘Committed to the Community’ initiative that aims to support and encourage local organisations and activities in various sectors be they cultural, social, philanthropic, humanitarian, environmental, heritage and sport, that help the Maltese Community in some way or another.
