On Thursday, the Europe Direct Information Centre – Victoria Gozo, in collaboration with the European Commission Representation, the European Parliament Office in Malta and the Young Reporters for Environment Malta celebrated Europe Day at the Sports Complex in Victoria, Gozo.

Form 2 students from all the Secondary Schools in Gozo participated in this fun and learning event.

Ms Marlene Muscat, EDIC manager opened the event followed by Mr Joe Grech, President of the Gozo Business Chamber. Dr Peter Agius, Head of the European Parliament Office in Malta addressed the students with information about migration and humanitarian aid.

Three students who participated in the 'EDIC /YRE Award Scheme' by submitting a written, video or photographic entry, organised by the Europe Direct -Victoria Gozo and the Young Reporters for Environment Malta, spoke about their experience while they were doing research for their entry and how all this effected their views on these subjects.

Winners of the competition were awarded an IPad each. Winners are Ms Maria Monpalao attending the Bishops' Conservatory Girls Secondary school, EKO Skola Committee from the Gozo College Secondary school and Elena Jo Xiberras from the Gozo College Secondary school. EKO Skola Committee, generously are donating the IPad to the person from Ghana who helped them in their research.

This was followed by a fun and educational game. Students took part in a human board game about Europe animated by the Ghaqda tal-Malti.

The closing speech was addressed by the Head of the European Commission Representation in Malta. She spoke on the creative solution presented by Robert Schumann to stop the European countries from fighting among themselves and how he announced this plan on the 9th May 1950 – a date which today is celebrated as Europe Day, since this gave birth to the European Union.

To close the event, all present enjoyed samples of traditional food from different European countries.
