At the end of June 2016, the stock of licensed motor vehicles stood at 352,671 up by almost one per cent over the previous quarter, the National Statistics Office said today.

At the end of June this year, the stock of licensed motor vehicles stood at 352,671. Of these, 79.1 per cent were passenger cars, 13.6 per cent were commercial vehicles, 6.2 per cent were motorcycles, while buses and minibuses accounted for less than one per cent. During this quarter the stock of licensed vehicles has increased at an average rate of 36 vehicles per day.

New licences issued during the period under review amounted to 5,857. The majority of new licences (4,186 or 71.5 per cent of the total) were issued to passenger cars, followed by motorcycles with 1,055.

Newly-licensed 'new' motor vehicles amounted to 2,890, or 49.3 per cent of the total, and newly licensed 'used' motor vehicles totalled 2,967. During the second quarter of 2016, newly licensed motorcycles increased by 57.0 per cent over the same period last year.

As at the end of June this year, 214,292 vehicles, or 60.8 per cent of the total, had petrol engines. Vehicles with diesel engines reached 136,627, or 38.7 per cent of the total.
