What challenges does Gozo face within the EU? Find out this FridayUpdate – Event cancelled. The European Parliament Office in Malta said that it regrets to inform that due to unforeseen circumstances the event “Gozo and the European Union : A discussion with MEPs” scheduled for this Friday had to be cancelled. “Any inconvenience is regretted.”

It added that it had tried to postpone the event to a later date “but did not manage to secure MEPs to a specific date hence it was decided to cancel and start afresh when there is a specific date to work with.”

This coming Friday, Gozitans will have the opportunity to join in a public discussion all about how Gozo features in the EU – Gozo and the European Union – A discussion with the MEPs.

Gozo is a land of stunning landscapes and friendly people, but what challenges does it face within the EU and how can they be remedied? Discuss this and more with MEPs and guests, at an event to be held in Gozo.

Earlier this year the European Parliament adopted a resolution on the special situation of islands in the EU.

MEPs noted that islands that are part of a Member State of the European Union are particularly vulnerable in the face of global challenges such as globalisation, climate change, demographic trends, energy supply and migration flows.

MEPs also called for structural remedies including a clear definition of the type of geographical, natural and demographic permanent handicaps that insular regions can suffer from and call on the European Commission to launch an in-depth study/analysis on the extra costs incurred as a result of being islands.

“Gozo is clearly not an exception to these challenges,” and on this note, the European Parliament Office in Malta is organising an event titled, Gozo and the European Union – A discussion with MEPs.

Panelists present will include MEP Roberta Metsola, MEP Therese Comodini Cachia, Marlon Grech, Thynk Software founder and Radi Abd El Haj the RS2 CEO.

Subjects to be discussed include:

– What specific ‘handicaps’ does Gozo face?

– How could they be remedied?

– How can Gozo become more connected and competitive?

– What measures are being taken and should be taken to further develop Gozo sustainably?

– How can we make the most of Gozo’s potential within the EU?

These themes will be discussed with MEPs and guest speakers from the private sector at the Sentinella Hall, Cittadella, Gozo, from 11.00am to 1.00pm, this Friday, the 30th of September.
