The Tobacco Industry Advisory Council (TIAC) has said in a statement that it believes that smoking in cars with minors creates dangers that need to be addressed.

"In this context, the reported initiative by the Ministry of Health, to establish a ban on smoking in vehicles where children are present, is fully supported by the Council."

The Tobacco Industry Advisory Council added that it believes that an ongoing cooperation with the appropriate health authorities can ensure an orderly management of the market.

"The Council is in full agreement with the Government's Youth Smoking Prevention programmes, as these reflect the over-riding belief that the choice of whether to smoke or not is one to be made by adults freely and without imposition," it said.

The Tobacco Industry Advisory Council is a grouping of the main players in the tobacco industry in Malta. Established in 1990, it said that it has sought consistently to give a fair and balanced view of the industry's position on tobacco and related issues.

"TIAC believes that an ongoing cooperation with appropriate health and other authorities ensures an orderly management of the market in the interests of all stakeholders. Its members include British American Tobacco (Malta) Limited, a member of the British American Tobacco (BAT) Group, with brands sold in over 180 countries."

"Also a member of the Tobacco Industry Advisory Council is Salvo Grima Group, founded in 1860 as a ship chandler and over the years diversified into various other fields related to the maritime and commercial activities, whilst maintaining a leading position in ship supply. The Salvo Grima Group is the leading distributor of tobacco products in Malta," the TIAC said.
