Minister for the Environment Jose Herrara announced announced in a press conference today that the Environment & Resources Authority has issued a Emergency Conservation Order to protect Gozo’s Azure Window in Dwejra.

The Emergency Order means that from now on, unless granted permission by the ERA, anybody walking on, or jumping off the Azure Window, or is in the sea area below the structure, will be liable to a €1,500 fine.

The Minister explained that bollards will be set up with information that it is an offence to walk beyond the boundary.

The Emergency Conservation Order is valid until June 2017, after which a permanent legislation will come into force with instant fines.

Dr Herrara said that a new committee which has been specially set up will be looking at how to further protect this iconic landmark.
