A loggerhead turtle was rescued early this morning by the Nature Trust Wildlife Rescue team following a call from the Marsaxlokk Police Station.

The young turtle was found entangled in a piece of net used in construction, carrier bags, two ropes and a very large tree branch. All these were around one of the back flippers which was the cause of a bad injury to this flipper.

NTM said that marine debris and other waste that end up in the sea are often the cause of such injures and at times death of these turtles that are today endangered worldwide.

Nature Trust (Malta) gave thanks to PC994 of the Malta Police Force for his help. The turtle has been called Carmine and is now with NTM’s Veterinary Surgeon Dr Anthony Gruppetta for treatment.

Nature Trust appealed to all to dispose of litter correctly so that it does not end up in the sea. Furthermore people who note injured turtles or in difficulty (or sadly dead) to call the Wildlife Rescue Team on 99999505.

“It is important that no lines are cut or pulled so as no further damage is done. Lines are usually removed by our vets to ensure that the correct procedures are followed and no new wounds are made.”
