On Tuesday, the Victoria Local Council welcomed to the Banca Giuratale, the Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri, the Minister for Culture Malcolm Paul Agius Galea, together with the Chairperson of the Victoria 2031 Foundation Samuel Azzopardi, its Governors, and members of the European Capital of Culture Jury.

The Mayor of Victoria Brian Azzopardi, said that ”this was truly a historic occasion, during which unique and historic documents bearing witness to the rich heritage of Victoria and Gozo were also exhibited. These included the declaration of autonomy of 1798, following the expulsion of the French from Gozo; the petition by the residents of Victoria to Queen Victoria requesting that the town be granted city status; as well as the official document by which this title was formally bestowed.”

He said that Tuesday’s meeting forms part of the final stage of a process that will reach its culmination tomorrow, when, following a presentation and a marathon of questions, the decision will be taken on whether Victoria will be awarded the title of European Capital of Culture.

”A significant moment for Victoria, for the whole of Gozo, and for our historical and cultural heritage,” said the Mayor.

Mayor Azzopardi concluded by saying that ”we look towards tomorrow with enthusiasm and hope, while remaining proud of our history, culture, and unique identity.”
