Kaccaturi San Ubertu (KSU) has said that its members participated in their annual survey recording migrating Quail during the hunting season which closed on Friday. This survey will be forwarded to the EU Commission.

“Unfortunately due to the early opening of the season in March Quails were very scarce with very few having been recorded migrating and very few shots were heard,” KSU said.

It called on the authorities to reconsider future derogations for Quail to fall within the period where these birds are scientifically known to migrate.

The organisation thanked its members and other hunters, “for their exemplary behaviour throughout the limited season under derogation.”
KSU also thanked the enforcement authorities and noted an increasing awareness on bird migration with several members and other hunters posting pictures of birds on social media and collaborating with bird watchers, it said.

“This trend is increasing in popularity and disproves the perception given by certain factions that hunters still shoot at everything that flies and helps to show the general public the diverse spectrum of birds that migrate over Malta,” KSU added.

KSU condemned what it described as “the handful of illegalities,” adding that it “notes a certain sector that abhors spring hunting fails to recognise reality and still calls for undemocratic measures to ban spring hunting.”
