Last Sunday marked the launch of the second phase of the Diocesan Mission which is being celebrated in Gozo during this pastoral year. During a solemn mass at the Gozo Cathedral, Bishop Mario Grech assigned 500 lay missionaries to convey the Good News of God’s love to all the families in Gozo.

The scope of this initiative is stated in the recent Bishops’ Pastoral Letter for Advent.

The Church in Malta wishes to undertake the role of the wise men’s star in people’s lives, so that with the Word of God it can accompany and help people to search, find and adore God who can transmute their life.

The family visits are a moment of grace. Our families are invited to remember that as God’s people we are called to be saints. These visits should help families and individuals to rediscover the essential beauty of Jesus and the community of the faithful (the Church) to bind themselves to Jesus with greater awareness and will-power and allow Him to be their shepherd to feel the important need to celebrate the Sunday Eucharist with the community while proceeding on a journey of faith through a lifelong catechetical experience.

Given the backdrop of the Pauline Year, a copy of the First Letter to Corinthians will be left with the families in addition to the collective prayers which the missionaries will recite in each home.

This pastoral action is being supported by perpetual adoration at Savina Church while various priests will be available in churches and convents, offering spiritual guidance and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays of the three-week phase, professional counsellors will be receiving people at St. James’ church, Victoria.
