Restoration work that has been carried out on several areas within the Cittadella was inaugurated today by the Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono. The areas where the renovation work include the tunnels, shelters, grain silos and the gunpowder magazine.
The Minister visited the restoration project earlier today, which was coordinated by Wirt Ghawdex as part of a broader project that also included the restoration of the medieval chapel of Santa Cecilia, Xewkija.
It was one of 38 projects proposed by 37 Non-Governmental Organisations under the Ministry for Gozo scheme linked to the first eco-Gozo Action Plan 2010-2012. This scheme was allocated a sum of around € 1.2 milion through which these organisations have carried out several social, cultural, environmental and infrastructure projects.
The Minister said that Wirt Ghawdex benefited from the maximum funding under this scheme, which amounted to € 50,000. Through this coordinated effort essential works had now been completed and the public are able to better appreciate and enjoy these two major historical sites in Gozo.
The Minister praised the work of Wirt Ghawdex, while also expressing her satisfaction on how the works were coordinated on these sites which are being preserved in accordance with the eco-Gozo objectives of sustainable development.
The work of the restoration project coordinated by Wirt Ghawdex included among others the installation of energy saving lighting, cleaning and general maintenance.
Wirt Ghawdex has also printed a brochure and installed information panels so that those visiting the sites can better understand and appreciate the history associated with them.
