There were an estimated 146,162 outbound tourists in the second quarter this year, this was a rise of 16.5% over 2017, the National Statistics Office said today.

Tourist trips towards non-EU countries went up by 39.8% over last year. Italy and the UK remained the most popular destinations, with a joint share of 49.0% of the trips.

Outbound tourists spent 943,085 nights, this was a rise of 3.2 %. The NSO noted that in absolute terms, the majority of guest nights (55.5%) were spent in rented accommodation establishments.

They spent €118.3 million between April and June, an increase of 9.2% over 2017, equivalent to an average €809 per trip.

There were 283,891 tourist trips between January and June, the NSO said that this was a rise of 18.0% over 2017.

Total nights spent during this same period went up by 9.9%, reaching nearly 1.8 million nights. During their say they spent an estimated €221.5 million, 10.1% higher than that recorded for the same period last year.
