Various health priorities were covered during discussions between PN MEP candidate Dr Michael Briguglio and the Malta Health Network, an umbrella organisation of around 40 organisations which is also represented at EU level.

Briguglio remarked, “I endorse MHN’s campaigning for mainstreaming of health at all levels of policy making. This includes the need to consult and factor in health aspects when considering development proposals, and giving more importance to issues such as people’s pain.”

He added that, “it is also very important to ensure that EU funds are used to improve the quality of life of patients and health services, and not just to meet minimum requirements established at EU level.”

The MEP candidate said he also believes that “Malta’s charter for patients’ rights should be properly implemented at all levels of the health sector, from hospitals to health centres in the public and private sectors.”

“This requires proper legal and institutional backing and investment. The same holds for Malta’s health strategy 2020-30, which is still very vague,” he added.

Michael Briguglio concluded by expressing his support for the proposals by the European Patients’ Forum, namely “access to health without discrimination, empowerment of patients, access to digital health, and better research and policymaking.”
