The Cana Movement in Gozo, organises an annual event during which a Gozitan Family is awarded the ‘Familja Qalb tad-Deheb’ title. The aim of this award is to deliver a message that despite the difficult challenges they have to go through, these families manage to stay together. This is also the case of the Saliba family from Ghajnsielem, who have been officially proclaimed as the recipient of this year’s award.

The ‘Familja Qalb tad-Deheb’ title has been awarded for the past 38 years. During a ceremony held at a distinguished hotel in Gozo, H.E. the President of Malta, Dr Edward Fenech Adami presented a shield to the winners of this years award, the shield will be kept by the Saliba family until next year’s edition.

The Hon. Giovanna Debono, Minister for Gozo presented the Saliba family with a gift on the occasion and the family also received other gifts from private companies that sponsored the activity. H.L. Mgr. Mario Grech, Bishop of Gozo, was also present for this event.

The family awarded the ‘Premju Familja Qalb tad-Deheb’ is chosen from amongst a number of families, who are nominated by different entities such as Local Councils and other non-governmental organisations in Gozo. The adjudicating committee within the Cana Movement in Gozo, evaluates the nominations and judges these families according to a number of criteria. The President of the committee, Notary Paul George Pisani, explained these criteria in a report that he himself read during the activity. The Cana Movement Director, Mgr. George Borg also delivered a speech for the occasion.

The Saliba family has shown courage and steadfastness in the face of adversity it had to face along the years. Its members are also active in voluntary groups and are instrumental through their assistance to other persons and families who encounter similar difficulties.
