Alternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party has said that it condemns the Maltese government for its pig-headedness in Strasbourg judge nominations.

Arnold Cassola, Alternattiva Demokratika Chairperson, said, “It is a real shame that the Maltese government refuses to nominate at least one woman in the list of three that it has presented to the European Court of Justice in Strasbourg. Because of the government’s insensitivity, the Council of Europe has refused to accept the Maltese list for the past three years.”

Mary Anne Zammit, Alternattiva Demokratika Spokesperson for Social Protection & Health, added, “The message the Maltese government is sending out to its European counterparts is that Maltese women are not capable of occupying certain posts. This is blatantly untrue, as has been demonstrated by Judge Ina Cremona, a respected Maltese Judge at the European court in Luxembourg.”

Yvonne Ebejer Arqueros, AD spokesperson on civil rights and candidate for EP elections, concluded, “Through its stubborn inaction, the Maltese government is not only doing a great disservice to Maltese women by depriving them of equal opportunities but is also extending this disservice to the whole Maltese population.”
