Gozitan Paul Mizzi (Pawlu) has passed away at the age of 89. He was the founder of Klabb Kotba Maltin in 1970 and Midsea Books Ltd in 1974.

Paying tribute to Mr Mizzi, Minister for Gozo Dr Justyne Caruana, said that Gozo salutes Paul Mizzi, a son of Gozo.

“Paul always worked tirelessly to make a name for Gozo and Gozitans. Thank you on behalf of all those who benefited from his work and skills,” said Dr Caruana. She sent condolences to the family.

Pawlu Mizzi was born in Victoria, Gozo and studied at the Gozo Seminary, the Malta College of Education and the Royal University of Malta where he graduated BA in 1966.

He worked as a correspondent in Gozo for the Allied Malta Newspapers. He was director of Il-Hajja from 1978 to 1981 and director of the Mediterranean Film Studios between 1987 and 1990.

He founded the Klabb Kotba Maltin in 1970 and the Midsea Books Ltd in 1974, and published a large number of prestigious books both in Maltese and English, including the Miklem Malti by Erin Serracino-Inglott and the two sets of dictionaries by Professor Guzè Aquilina.

The historical magazine Heritage is one of the most prestigious historical reviews regarding Maltese history. His magnum opus will definitely remain Il-Parrocca ta’ Ghawdex.

Studju socjo-kulturali ta’ epoka 1432-1689, published in 1996 by the Kumitat Storiku-Kulturali of St George’s basilica; this is a detailed chronological account of the birth and development of Christianity on the island of Gozo from the time of St Paul to the present age, with particular and constant reference to Gozo’s earliest Christian community huddled around St George’s parish in Gozo’s ancient town of Rabat.

Mizzi was awarded the Medal for the Service of the Republic in 1992 and made a member of the Sacra Ordine Militare Constaniniana de San Jorge in 1994.
