A Pet Friendly Holiday is being organised for the third consecutive year by the Ministry for Gozo through the Animal Welfare Department Gozo.

Those visitors crossing over to Gozo with their pets between the 12th and 17th of August – for the popular feast of Santa Marija – will be given a special pet ticket which must be presented to Gozo Channel officials.

They will be provided with drinking water for pets at both Gozo Channel ferry terminals of Cirkewwa and Mgarr, to help them find some relief from this intense summer heat. Owners will also be given an information leaflet about their care in hot weather.

The Minister for Gozo Dr Justyne Caruana, speaking during a visit to the offices of the Animal Welfare section in Gozo, said that the Ministry is investing fully in order to provide the services and facilities which our animals deserve.

“This year, the Ministry has has invested in a new animal ambulance, a running area in Xewkija, a dog park within the Ta’ Sopu family park, Nadur as well as a neutering campaign for cats and in the near future, one for dogs as well, the initiative for the adoption of pets which includes the relative information pack, and information about the raising of pets,” said Dr Caruana.

Heidi Grech of Animal Welfare Gozo said that in the summer there is a tendency for more animals to be abandoned, and so the section thought that awareness campaigns should be organised against abandonment and cruelty, as well as on the animal related services available on Gozo.
