BirdLife Malta has released two more juvenile Greater Flamingos back to the wild, including another rescued in Gozo. Both birds have been nursed back to strength by the organisation during the last weeks.

One had been rescued from Sarraflu, Gozo, in August by an ERA officer after two people found the bird settled in the area.

BirdLife Malta said that the people stood guard over the flamingo which, it said, had “settled in a very notorious area for hunting.”

The other was also rescued in August, this time in Malta, by Foresta 2000’s warden Raymond Vella from Ghadira beach.

The bird was stranded and exhausted from migration and needed the longest care among all four flamingos rescued so far this season, BirdLife said.

The NGO added that, both birds were nursed back to a healthy weight which should allow them to continue their migratory journey.

The Government vet gave her go-ahead for them to be released back into the wild following two other flamingos that have already left Ghadira Nature Reserve last week.
