Informational talks for the general public – Know Your Medicines – are being organised by the Pharmacy Department of the Gozo General Hospital and will tackle important general pharmaceutical topics.

This initiative is being organised to mark World Pharmacists Day, a global celebration that aims to promote and advocate for the role of the pharmacist in improving patient health.

The talks, which will have a Q&A aspect to them, will be led by Reuben Demanuele, a pharmacist by profession and the Director of Procurement and Supply Chain for Steward Health Care Malta.

He will be covering topics such as the dangers of counterfeit drugs and medicines procured through the internet, the importance of avoiding using medicines that were prescribed for others and why we need to be aware of the threat and consequences of antimicrobial resistance.

Senior clinical pharmacist at Gozo General Hospital Dr Graziella Portelli, who is coordinating the event stated that “it is very important that patients are well-informed on how to best use medicines.”

She added that “with so much misinformation available nowadays, it is important that the public has opportunities to get answers from pharmacists, who are the experts in the field of medicine.”

Attendance is free charge and no registration is required. Healthy beverages and snacks will be provided.

The organisers said that, depending on the audience, the talks can be held in both English and Maltese and any interventions are welcome in both. Some technical language where relevant will be in English.

Know Your Medicines – is taking place on Wednesday, the 25th of September, at 9am and again at 2pm in the hospital lecture room.
