Liquid Farm waste ends up in Gozo sewer after heavy rainsFollowing the heavy rainfall this week, the Water Services Corporation said that a large quantity of liquid farm waste has found its way to the Gozo sewer.

The Corporation in a statement said that, had it not been for the timely action of workers from the WSC this incident could have jeopardised months of work and multi-million euros of investments, including the recently repaired submarine outfall and diffuser.

It said that farmers in Gozo now have access to a state-of-the-art slurry treatment facility, which gives a concrete sustainable solution to dispose of such waste.

This service is now suspended until Monday to allow sufficient time for the required recovery processes to take place, the Corporation added.

“The WSC is currently drastically beefing up its enforcement sections, including live monitoring equipment,” it said.

Perpetrators will face “drastic action” and will be held responsible for any damages sustained to its infrastructure,” and the WSC added that the assistance of the Police will be sought as required.

The Corporation reiterated that sewage infrastructure is very complex and delicate and that such infrastructure can be damaged through the improper use of the urban sewer system.

It is, therefore, very important that only human toilet waste and degradable toilet paper are discharged in the system, it said.

Any suspected foul play or problems with sewers can be reported to the corporation on Freephone: 8007 6400; Email: customercare@wsc.com.mt Website live chat: www.wsc.com.mt or through WSC’s social media.
