In a statement to Parliament, Infrastructure Minister Austin Gatt said that a buoy to take the berthing of cruise liners on the outside of Xlendi bay, will start to be laid in mid-2009. The buoy will be capable of taking cruise liners up to 20,000 tons displacement and 130 metres in length.
Dr Gatt said in reply to a parliamentary question by Anton Refalo (PL), that cruise passengers would be transported to and from the shore on the ships’ own tenders, and would use the existing jetty in Xlendi bay to embark and disembark.
