There were an estimated 287,191 inbound tourists to the Maltese Islands in October, the National Statistics Office said today. This was an increase of 6.1% when compared to the corresponding month in 2018.

Of these, 249,588 were carried out for holiday purposes, while a further 22,026 were for business purposes.

The NSO noted that inbound tourists from Non-EU countries went up by 17.6% when compared to the corresponding month in 2018.

The number of nights spent went up by 6.5% when compared to October last year, reaching nearly 1.9 million nights, with the largest share of guest nights (54.5%) spent in collective accommodation establishments, the NSO said.

Total tourist expenditure was estimated at €231.1 million, an increase of 7.1% over the corresponding month in 2018.

For the first ten months of this year, inbound tourist trips surpassed 2.4 million an increase of 5.0% over last year. Total nights spent by inbound tourists went up by 3.2%, surpassing 17.1 million nights, the NSO said.

During the same period the total tourism expenditure was estimated at almost €2.0 billion, 4.5% higher than that recorded in 2018, while the total expenditure per capita stood at €822, a decrease of 0.4% when compared to last year.
