World Braille Day is celebrated by the United Nations on the 4th of January. It is observed to raise awareness of the importance of Braille as a means of communication in the full realisation of the human rights and independence for blind and partially sighted people.

Minister for Gozo Justyne Caruana said that the government’s strategy in this sector is that everyone should feel included in society. To mark the occasion the Minister announced the launch of a new course.

She said that the Ministry, in collaboration with the Gozo Aid for Visually Impaired (GAVI) , will launch a training programme on the use of mobiles for visually impaired people.

Ms Mary Rose Attard, on behalf of Gozo Aid for Visually Impaired, said that through this course, sponsored by the Ministry for Gozo, visually impaired people will be given training to make better use of smartphones via a dedicated application that can be used both on iOS or Android systems.

She said today smartphones have become an essential item and everyone should be able to make better use of them.
