The Gozo Football Association has said that it “deplores without reservations the assault suffered earlier today by Mr Andrea Pavi,” who was attacked by a player from Sannat Lions during a match this afternoon.
Pavia was one of the Assistant Referees in the match between Oratory Youths and Sannat Lions, from the BOV Gozo Football League of the second division, which was being played at the Kercem Ajax Stadium. The match was abandoned in the 89th minute.
According to reports the trouble started after two players from the Sannat side were given the red card as the game neared the end.
The Gozo Football Association said that it will be taking all the necessary disciplinary action as established by the statute of the Association and also by that of the Malta Football Association.
The Association went on to express solidarity with Mr Andrea Pavia and with the other match officials Mr Massimo Axisa and Mr Adrian Caruana.
The GFA concluded by saying that it does not tolerate these kinds of actions in Gozitan football and anywhere else and thanked the Malta Police for their intervention and for their cooperation.
