The Malta Union of Teachers said that it has requested a urgent meeting with the Prime Minister in the light of developments with the Covid-19 virus.

It said that in particular, the measures being taken in the country are having a direct effect on schools.

“The lack of action being taken by the authorities in schools is leading to “panic situations,” with some schools reporting that they had only 40% of students attending, the Union said.

The MUT said “immediate and urgent” discussions should take place leading to the closure of schools for a period to be determined.

The Union concluded by saying that it is aware of all the implications that such a decision carries with it.
