In the latest Covid-19 update by the Prime Minister on Thursday, he has announced that all schools, childcare centres and the University of Malta will close as of this Friday for one week.

Prime Minister Abela explained that a further decision will be taken next week.

Dr Abela also appealed that with immediate effect mass activities should be cancelled and following discussions with the the Malta Football Association senior league games will be held behind closed doors, while youth matches in Gozo and Malta have all been suspended.

The Prime Minister went on to say that after discussions with the Archbishop of Malta, and the Bishop of Gozo, as from Monday, Mass will be broadcast in the morning on TVM2, as will the rosary in the afternoon.

“We again convey the message that the health of our people is the first priority of this government, although uncomfortable, these decisions are necessary to keep the situation as it is, calm, we are proactive, we are making hour by hour decisions that are taken as required, not just after listening to experts, but also by listening to the Maltese and Gozitan people,” said Dr Abela.

Health Minister Chris Fearne announced that under the Pharmacy of Your Choice scheme, from this Monday, two months worth of medicines will be distributed to 140,000 elderly who are in the scheme to avoid them having to leave their homes unnecessarily. Dr Fearne said that they will either be delivered, or can be collected by a relative.

Chris Fearne also called asked that children do not visit the elderly if at all possible.
