The European Commission’s Directorate for Youth, Sport and Citizenship within DG Education and Culture has published the results for the grants it awarded in the framework of the “Europe for Citizens” Programme under its action for “Town Twinning.”

The Victoria Local Council was awarded €18,653 for a project in collaboration with the municipality of Nichelino, in Italy, while the Hamrun Local Council was awarded €22,000 for a project in collaboration with the municipality of Carpineto Romano, which is also in Italy. These projects were approved under a Measure entitled ‘Town Twinning Citizens Meetings.’

‘Town Twinning Citizens Meetings’ is aimed at bringing together a wide range of citizens from twinned towns in order to capitalise on the partnership between the municipalities and strengthen mutual knowledge and understanding between citizens and cultures. Such collaborations are based on a commitment to European integration, active participation of the local communities and the promotion of intercultural dialogue.

Two more successful applications were submitted by MEUSAC (Malta EU Steering and Action Committee) and Santa Lucija (Malta) Local Council under another Measure entitled ‘The Thematic Networking of Twinned Towns’. MEUSAC was awarded a grant of €19,441 for a project on sustainability, while the Santa Lucija (Malta) Local Council was awarded €18,612 for a project on ethnicity, creativity and intercultural dialogue.

Projects under this measure serve as a basis for future initiatives and action between the towns involved on issues related to themes relevant to citizens, local associations and other groups.
