Eight new cases of Covid-19 have tested positive in Malta, the number includes a 3-year old child, Supt. of Public Health, Prof Charmaine Gauci, said on Tuesday.

Prof Gauci advised that total confirmed cases now stand at 38 and all are in a stable condition.

There is a father and son, aged 58 and 15. The father had been abroad, the wife had already contracted the virus.

Another two cases are a man and woman, aged 62 and 26 respectively, who returned from England on the 13th of March, both were on the same flight.

A 28-year old Maltese man is another case, he had been in contact with people who had previously travelled from infected areas abroad.

Health authorities are investigating and contact tracing the case of a 52-year old man, he tested positive, however had not been overseas, or been in contact with anyone who had. The man worked for a private company.

Prof Gauci explained that the authorities are also looking in to how the transmission occurred in the case of a woman who was in Mater Dei for a fracture and with another patient in a room. Virus symptoms started while in hospital and the woman tested positive, she was transferred straight to IDU. The other patient has tested negative.

Prof Gauci stressed that the room has been thoroughly disinfected and has not been used.
