The Cabinet has today approved a bill amending the conditions for divorce, which will be presented before Parliament this evening by Parliamentary Secretary for Equality and Reform Rosianne Cutajar for the first reading of this bill.

In a statement, the Government said that work on the bill required a “strong legal commitment to analyse the details of the current law which came into force almost a decade ago.”

It went on to say that this bill removes all legal obstacles in order to better address the realities of Maltese and Gozitan families.

“The bill will reduce the many difficulties faced by people in this situation, including children, as there will be changes in the length of time required to wait in order to obtain a divorce,” the Government said.

The Government concluded by saying that it will continue to monitor the situation and “will continue to work to strengthen the family through a progressive policy.”
