A small fluffy dog owes its life to a quick-thinking yachtsman who spotted it struggling for survival in the sea about 200 metres off the coast near Mgarr ix-Xini yesterday afternoon. Realising the desperate plight of the poor creature, Josef Muscat of Balzan wasted no time in launching his inflatable dinghy from his yacht to reach the dog which seems to be on the verge of giving up in the chilly sea. Josef and his friends grabbed the dog from the sea and, wrapping him in a towel, rushed him to the shore, realising that he needed immediate assistance if he was to survive.

Josef contacted Gozo SPCA’s emergency line and the Centre Manager Betty Berry went immediately to aid the dog. It was in deep shock and suffering from hypothermia after a probably lengthy time in the sea, which is very cold at this time of year. The little dog was barely conscious and unable to sit or stand. Life saving warmth was provided with blankets and a hair dryer to dry his thick, sopping wet coat. Electrolytes were administered by syringe and within an hour little “Phelps”, as he is now known, had turned the corner, lifting his head and trying to sit up. The Gozo Vet Dr Galea later visited the dog, which was been cared for at the Centre Manager’s home, and administered further treatment.

Without Josef Muscat’s prompt response this little dog would have undoubtedly died, he was very close to death when he was rescued. Betty Berry paid tribute to Josef and his friends for the care that they showed Phelps, which saved his life. He even gave a generous donation to help with Phelp’s medical expenses, a gesture which Gozo SPCA greatly appreciates, being a voluntary organisation.

It has been a busy 2 days for Gozo SPCA with 2 big puppies also brought into the shelter after they were abandoned in Marsalforn car park. Once again the inadequate Rescue premises in Victoria are bursting at the seams, with the volunteers and Animal Welfare Officer desperately trying to work out where to house the latest intake.

The good news is that Gozo SPCA Manager, Betty Berry, reports that Phelps is making a very good recovery from his ordeal this afternoon.
