As part of the Dinja Wahda environmental education programme (1), around 75 children raised nearly €1000 for the Foresta 2000 afforestation Project in Mellieha and presented the donation to BirdLife officials just before the start of the 4 hour marathon walk from Rabat to Is-Simar on Sunday.

The Marathon Walk is one of the most popular activities organized by Klabb Huttaf for BirdLife Malta’s young members (2). This year BirdLife Malta together with its partner in education Bank of Valletta also invited the primary schools taking part in Dinja Wahda to attend the Marathon Walk and contribute to the Foresta 2000 conservation project by raising donations.

“Many of the children are familiar with the Foresta2000 site from tree-adoption activities organized by their schools or with their families. The children showed a lot of enthusiasm in helping this conservation project by gathering donations,” said Nicolette Falzon, Dinja Wahda Schools Coordinator.

The donations collected will be used to purchase a grass cutter for the Foresta2000 project. Foresta2000 is Malta’s largest afforestation project and is a partnership between BirdLife Malta, Din l-Art Helwa and PARKS department of the Ministry for Resources and Rural Affairs.
