The International Day of the Midwife is being celebrated today, to recognise and celebrate the invaluable contributions of Midwives to maternal healthcare.

This year’s theme is, “Midwives with women: celebrate, demonstrate, mobilise, unite – our time is NOW.”

Midwives around the world have still been working tirelessly during the pandemic and the Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses has said in a statement that it would like to “thank our amazing midwifery teams who continue to reassure and care for mothers and babies, today and every day.”

The Union added that, “the innovation, flexibility, resilience and caring nature of the Maltese midwives is acknowledged today.”

“2020 has brought many unexpected challenges to our nation with the Covid-19 pandemic that is impacting on us all in so many ways,” the MUMN said. “As a profession you have much to be proud of as you have continued to provide the best possible care to mothers and babies.”

It pointed out that “the challenges have not only been professional but also personal and despite our own situations you have continued to put the needs of mothers and babies central to your actions.”

The World Health Organisation has made 2020 the International Year of the Midwife and the Nurse.

The MUMN concluded by saying that “for the first time, countries across the world will unite in recognition of the essential role that midwives play in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and Universal Health Coverage.”
