2 new Covid-19 cases, including an 81-year old man who died overnightIn Tuesday’s update on the current Covid-19 situation, Supt of Public Health Prof Charmaine Gauci said that 2 new cases had been reported in the past 24-hours, from 1218 tests.

Prof Gauci said that sadly, 1 of the new cases was an 81-year old man who had passed away overnight, he had underlying health problems, including liver, respiratory and heart conditions.

She said when the man was tested he was found to be positive for the virus. He was being treated at the Karin Grech Hospital.

Prof Gauci explained that contact tracing is now taking place to assess if any staff or other patients had been in contact with him.

The other case involves a 44-year man who developed symptoms on the 3rd of May but was not at work. Contact tracing is being done among his family member.

She went on to say that there are 482 cases, 4 more people have recovered, making 403 in total, 74 cases are currently active, and there have now been 5 deaths.

Gauci added that 5 patients being treated at the Boffa Hospital, and 4 at St Thomas and 2 at Mater Dei, no one is in ITU, she said.

Prof Gauci appealed to the public to wear masks and stressed the importance of wearing them correctly, if the nose is exposed, it is a pointless exercise. Social distancing must also be adhered to, even when wearing a mask, she said.

She reiterated the need for those in the population who are vulnerable, to remain inside and only venture out for essential needs. This includes 65s and over, those with certain medical conditions and pregnant women.
