Following all activities, focused mainly on marine litter, the Eco-Schools Committee at Gozo College Middle School is continuing working hard towards their goal of making their school and the island of Gozo more environmentally friendly.
Hot on the heels of their interview with Qala Mayor Paul Buttigieg where the students proposed to make Hondoq Bay the first plastic free beach in the Maltese Islands, they have now come up with an Eco-Code – Love Your Planet As You Love Yourself.
The students together with their teacher have been holding online meetings to discuss the Eco-Code. The drawings in the Eco-Code were done by the students themselves.
The Gozo College Middle School Eco-Schools Committee explained that an Eco-Code is an Eco-School’s environmental mission statement, which demonstrates a school’s commitment to being sustainable.
To give something back to nature students also adopted Donna, a loggerhead turtle that was rescued at Mgarr Gozo. Donna is still being rehabilitated due to her extensive injuries.
Previously the students had adopted Doris, this was as part of the Be Drastic Cut Plastic campaign in 2018/19. Doris was released at Mellieha, with the students present to watch the happy event.
The students would like to encourage the general public to follow in their footsteps by becoming “agents of change.”
Anyone who is interested in Adopting a Turtle to help in their rehabilitation, can please contact Nature Trust FEE Malta or visit Adopt a Turtle Facebook page.
