Another nine localities, including two in Gozo – San Lawrenz and Xaghra, are benefitting from funds under the Urban Greening scheme for local councils.

The green projects in San Lawrenz and Xaghra will be carried out in the main squares of the localities. In San Lawrenz it will also include the belvedere and playing field.

The urban greening scheme with a total investment of almost €1 million, will now be entering its second phase of implementation. In Malta the seven councils are; Rabat, Valletta, Santa Venera, Marsaxlokk, Qormi, Isla, and Qrendi.

The announcement was made by Minister for the Environment, Climate Change and Planning Aaron Farrugia, who said that the concept of urban greening incorporates projects which seek to green urbanised areas for the benefit of the mental and physical wellbeing of our communities, particularly those in industrial areas with a high population density and lack of access to rural areas.

He explained that these projects will include, among other elements, tree planting, greening of squares and roads in urban areas, and the installation of new irrigation systems. In Qormi, a public garden will also be built with an investment of €195,000.
