The Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses is organising a Civil Protest in front of the Auberge de Castille tomorrow morning at 10am regarding the employment of foreign nurses in the Gozo General Hospital.

The Union said that it will be requesting the intervention of Prime Minister Robert Abela “to stop Steward Health Care from continuing to employ foreign nurses at the Gozo Hospital to the detriment of Gozitan nurses working in Malta and their families.”

On Friday, the union registered an industrial dispute with Steward, saying that from last Monday, “no nursing care on query cases on Covid cases will take place, nor will any services continue related to Covid in the Gozo General Hospital.”

The union has received the “full support” of the Nationalist Party on the position taken by the MUMN. The Association of Gozitan Employees in Malta has also voiced its concerns over the employment of the foreign nurses.

However on Sunday, a warrant of prohibitory injunction was filed by Steward Health Care Malta, which was provisionally accepted by the court, with a hearing scheduled for later this month.

Steward stressed that “the employment of foreign nurses was carried out with full knowledge of the MUMN and as an interim measure to support GGH nurses on the ground until such a time as the Gozo nurses can be released from Malta to work in Gozo.”

The company explained that, “we have also made it clear that these foreign nurses in no way interfere with the transfer of Gozo nurses working in Malta to Gozo General Hospital.”
