On his first official visit to Gozo yesterday, President George Abela visited the Arka Foundation in Ghajnsielem.

He was able to see at first hand the fundraising marathon which was being held at the time by the Arka Foundation.

The new President was also given a tour of all the facilities and met with many of staff and people with special needs attending the centre.

The President said that he was very satisfied with the philanthropic work done in Gozo and Malta, especially for people with disabilities.

The Arka Foundation is a voluntary, non-profit making and non-governmental organization that promotes the welfare of people with special needs and of their families, irrespective of their creed or nationality.

It aims at:

Creating and fostering a positive attitude towards the disabled;

Enriching the quality of life of disabled people;

Promoting community integration and access by the loaning of special aids and equipment;

Forming links in the local community by organizing excursions and similar activities;

Facilitating support groups for the disabled.

Hard cash is needed to keep this centre running efficiently. In fact about Lm100,000 are spent annually, the bulk of which are taken up by wages.

Fund-raising activities are continually organized. To help the centre along in this uphill struggle, a large number of volunteers give freely of their time and abilities. Besides, the Director, Mgr Manuel Curmi, goes as far afield as Australia and Canada in his quest to collect much-needed funds.

A membership scheme has been launched in which a yearly donation, however small, is voluntarily paid. To date, over 400 persons have joined the scheme.
