The Medical Association of Malta, in a statement on Thursday, said that “Minister Farrugia must recognise her responsibility and stop all mass events and let this cluster be an eye opener.”
The Association went on to say that it is pleased to note that Tourism Minister Julia Farrugia has acknowledged that “she knows about the large number of festivals which have been refused by all other EU countries and which were lobbied by the MTA to come to Malta instead.”
“She had clearly evaded the question two days before,” the MAM said. “As no country in the EU has to date allowed mass events without consequence, one wonders which experts she has consulted.”
The Association arged that “the notorious party with 700 attendees has resulted in 22 positive cases to date, one medical ward closed, two schools closed, the closure of the central bank, a number of doctors and nurses on quarantine. It is possible that more people who attended are asymptomatic carriers and are spreading the virus without being aware.”
Furthermore, the Association said, within 3 days 10,000 requests for swabbing were requested well above the current capacity, creating a waiting list of one week. The 111 lines crashed and new lines had to be added.
This basically paralysed the track and trace procedure and the MAM stressed that, “as a result the virus might spread further while the swab test is pending. MAM is informed that the health ministry is working hard to increase capacity and MAM supports these efforts.”
It added that “this episode should be an eye opener for Minister Farrugia, and she should realise that mass events are a mistake and should be stopped.”
The Association stated that the public health authorities are “facing great difficulty just to control this cluster and are in no position to deal with concerts for thousands of overseas revellers and their consequences.”
“While all medical doctors and other healthcare professionals have the patient at heart and will do their best for their patients, they expect all authorities to act responsibly and safeguard the health of the nation,” said the MAM.
It concluded by saying that “decisions must be based on science and good medical ethics, not on economic gambles especially when a vaccine is only a few months away.”
