The MUT said that it is continuing to monitor the situation of the pandemic in view of the reopening of schools with the entry of students which is taking place these days.
The union, in a statement, said that it is “deeply concerned about the number of positive cases being reported every day.”
“The number of positive cases in our country is large and this, together with the rate of transmission in the community, will have an impact on schools,” the union said. “As expected, there have already been positive cases in schools.”
The union went on to say that “this situation does not bode well, and in a few days we may have schools that do not have enough educators to provide service due to quarantine or sick leave circumstances.”
The MUT stressed that it is “the responsibility of the Government to ensure that the schools it has opened have all health and safety measures. The opening of schools requires restraint and enforcement measures.”
The union argued that “all the efforts of educators, who are implementing rigid health protocols in schools, will come to nothing when students are out of schools. It is known that measures taken by the government, such as those of social distance, are not being enforced everywhere.”
“This while the other measures, which aim to suppress the spread of the virus, are too few,” it said. “In addition there are still too many conflicting directions from the same government exponents.”
In view of this, the MUT said that it is once again calling on the Government to “send clear messages, take new measures to curb the spread of the virus while increasing enforcement measures.”
The MUT is giving an ultimatum to the Government until this Thursday to take the requested measures.
In the meantime, the MUT said that it will be announcing a set of directives that “protect the health and safety of educators.”
