Earlier this week, Minister George Pullicino, and Dr Joanna Drake, Head of European Commission Representation in Malta, launched ‘Carbon Footprints’ – a 30-minute documentary DVD aimed at primary and secondary school children.
This project does not only aim to increase awareness about climate change, but also to mobilise people to minimise their carbon footprint.
Children are the key to changing society’s long-term attitudes towards the environment. Not only are they passionate about saving the planet, but children also have a big influence over their families’ lifestyles and behaviour.
The DVD has been produced by the European Commission Representation in Malta, the Ministry for Resources and Rural Affairs and Reel8 productions, in collaboration with the Meteorological Office at Malta International Airport and HSBC.
The DVD was distributed to all primary and secondary, state and non-state schools in Malta by the Directorate for Educational Services (DES) in the Ministry for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport and the European Commission Representation in Malta.
Each year, schools throughout the European Union participate in ‘Spring Day for Europe’, with activities organised around one or two key themes. The DVD is being launched as part of Spring Day 2009. Climate change is one of the most serious problems the world is facing today. Rising sea temperatures and melting ice caps are frequent reminders of one’s own ‘carbon footprint’ and therefore everyone should be thinking about what one can do to preserve the planet for future generations.
